Artist Statement
I create vibrant mixed media paintings that attempt to explore themes of spontaneity, natural disconnect, and the joy of the unknown. In everyday life we’re often faced with the sense that we're terra incognita, a juxtaposition of disparate elements accumulated along our life's journey. The natural world can provide insights into how we interpret ourselves and our unique experiences. My paintings map this inner landscape, marrying characteristics that are seemingly at odds-- spiritual and analytical, domestic and wild, polished and raw-- and explore how these can come together into a single composition, like ourselves. Stark geometries and geometric repetitions are layered with highly gestural and intensely reworked surfaces that are scraped, gouged, and etched to reveal the vibrancy beneath. The paintings invite the viewer to interpret and experience the art from varying distances and angles, exploring the shapes, forms, and palette without limitations.
